João Valinho, born in the suburbs of Sintra, began his musical career after completing his studies in Fine Arts.

Described as “one of the most visible and reliable voices on the Lisbon scene” (Guy Peters, Free Jazz Collective) in the context of creative music.

He conceives his musical practice as a tool for liberation: experimental improvisational methodology operates as a challenge to the standardization of thought.

In addition to his musical practice, he also develops interdisciplinary work with dance, theater, and performance.

Current projects: MOVE, Fashion Eternal, Sonic Tender, Subplanar, Rodrigo Amado Refraction Quartet, Barullo Colectivo, Quarto com Luz, Anthropic Neglect. Festival performances include: Jazz em Agosto (Portugal), Oct-Loft Jazz Fest (China), SESC Mirada (Brazil), Serralves Jazz no Parque (Portugal), MMVV (Spain), RTP Festa do Jazz 2024 (Portugal), BiMHUIS Space Is The Place (Netherlands), Spontaneous Music Festival (Poland), Outono em Jazz (Portugal), Guarda in Jazz (Portugal), Portalegre JazzFest 2023 (Portugal) and Serralves em Festa (Portugal).
